French fashion has always been synomymous with style and sophistication.Paris is one of the world’s fashion capitals and well known for its many renowned fashion houses. The nation has produced a number of the world’s greatest fashion designers and brands.  Here are five of the most famous and fabulous French designers to date.

Pierre Cardin

Pierre Cardin is a designer who quickly got to the top and became a householdname in the world of fashion.  His designs are highly acclaimed and recognized globally. As a designer, he prefers geometric shapes and generally ignores the female form. The bubble dress was an introduction by Cardin in 1954. He has won several awards for his designs. In 1996, The Italian Chamber of Commerce in France awarded him with the France-Italie Prize. He resides and works in Paris. His designs include hats, clothing, perfume, footwear and much more.

Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuittonis a huge name in the fashion industry. He was born August 4, 1821 and died February 27, 1892. Louis Vuitton started his career as a luggage manufacturer and designer in Paris. Today Louis Vuitton is one of the most prestigious brands in fashion. Louis Vuitton handbags and luggage are often considered status symbols. Presently, Louis Vuitton is one of the largest and most recognized fashion houses in the world.

Christian Dior

Christian Dior is another renowned and influential name in the fashion world. He was born on January 21, 1905 and died on October 24, 1957. In 1946 he set up his own fashion house and within twelve years, he developed his business in fifteen counties. In 1947, he became famous for his concept of ‘The New Look’ which introduced a new idea of color that included soft grays, lilacs,bluesand dusty rose hues and introduced a fragrance of the same name. ‘The New Look’ changed the entire sense of style for women and made Paris the epicenter of fashion.

Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel

Also known as Coco Chanel, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel was born on August 19, 1883 and died on January 10, 1971. She is a name associated with elegance and expensive simplicity. She has been the only fashion designer who has been named TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people of the 20th century. Her designs were always elegant, simple, revealing and comfortable. Chanel is a big name in the world of fashion and she always believed and shared her philosophy that simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.

Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent

This is another big name in French fashion, also known as Yves Saint Laurent.  This designer was born on August 1, 1936 and died on June 1, 2008. Initially he started his career in House of Dior and later created and established his own brand. His designs included tight pants, high boots, tweed suits and much more.
